Toyota to recall Lexus SUVs to fix floor mat

CNBC's Phil LeBeau has the latest details on Toyota's recall.

By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit Bureau

Having hoped to put its embarrassing unintended acceleration scandal behind it, Lexus is now recalling two more models due to the possibility loose floor mats could cause accelerator pedals to jam, leading the vehicles to surge out of control.

The two models covered by the latest recall are the Lexus RX 350 and RX 450h hybrid, with a total of nearly 134,000 vehicles involved.? The new service actions are relatively modest when compared to the millions of vehicles covered by earlier sudden acceleration problems, but the latest recall puts Toyota back into the spotlight after having spent the last several years trying to rebuild its reputation for high quality and reliability.

?It was just beginning to fade from people?s memories,? said analyst Rebecca Lindland, of IHS Automotive.? ?This is like scratching an old wound.?

Honda Polishes its Environmental Credentials

Arguably the worst public relations crisis in Toyota Motor Co. history began in mid-2009 when a California Highway Patrol officer and several family members were killed when a Lexus they had borrowed surged out of control, plunging off a highway and bursting into flames.

While Toyota had been facing accusations of unintended acceleration for some time the event led the automaker to order the recall of 3.8 million Lexus and Toyota brand vehicles because loose mats could catch under the accelerator pedal.? Two months later it added a second callback, this one involving millions more vehicles equipped with potentially sticky accelerator assemblies.?

Then, in early 2010, Toyota announced it would temporary halt production of some of its most popular vehicles to replace the accelerator units. ?

Toyota, BMW Expand Their Alliance

Further complicating matters, the maker was slammed by a series of unrelated problems, from steering issues with the Corolla or minivans that were experiencing severe corrosion problems.? In all, Toyota was forced to recall more than 10 million vehicles ? a company that was long known for bulletproof reliability ended the year with more recalls than any other manufacturer in the business.

Critics contended that the two recalls did not address all the problems allegedly causing Toyota products to race out of control.? That possibility was raised during angry hearings on Capitol Hill in which Toyota President Akio Toyoda came under severe criticism.

Federal safety regulators also were targeted for allegedly going soft on the maker, secret documents suggesting Toyota had found ways to get the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to back down on one earlier safety problem, saving the company millions of dollars.

Shift to City Living Threatens Auto Industry

The government empowered two separate independent studies, one run by NASA, the other by the National Science Academy, looking into the possibility of unknown gremlins that might be causing Toyota?s electronic engine controllers to malfunction.? Both studies cleared the maker ? driver error taking the bulk of the blame.?

But investigators also suggested it was possible that they simply hadn?t been able to isolate random electronic issues.? That claim has been the centerpiece of extensive legal action aimed at Toyota by those claiming to have experienced unintended acceleration.

The latest recall harkens back to the very first Toyota ordered to deal with the ?UA? issue, potential carpet entrapment forcing it to order repairs on 131,800 2010-model RX 350 crossovers and another 22,200 RX 450 hybrids.

?It will be interesting to see if that affects efforts to settle the ongoing legal problems,? said analyst Lindland.

Owners of the involved vehicles will receive a safety recall notification by first class mail in early August 2012. ?Lexus dealers will remedy the involved vehicles at no cost to the customers.

Healing Hong Kong: The Huge Challenge for the New Chief of China's Freest City

For as long as anyone can remember, the business of Hong Kong has been business. The most succinct reflection of that is the postcolonial title of the territory's head of government. It's not mayor or minister, but Chief Executive. The job description effectively matches the title: maintain a positive balance sheet (deep fiscal reserves), satisfy your major shareholders (domestic and foreign conglomerates and banks), execute top-down management (the Establishment knows best). The formula proved wildly successful for the colonial British, who coupled their administrative skills with the enterprise of the local Chinese to transform a clutch of villages into...

Second international energy company looking at LNG terminal in Prince Rupert

A second major gas company has begun looking at Prince Rupert for the site of an LNG export terminal.

Petronas, a Malaysian state-owned oil and gas company, announced it would be conducting a feasibility study for an export terminal in Prince Rupert at the same time it announced plans to purchase Canada's Progress Energy Resources Corp. for $4.8 billion. Petronas joins the BG Group in undertaking a feasibility study for an LNG export terminal in Prince Rupert, though this time Ridley Island isn't the focal point.

"The site Petronas is looking at is on the Lelu Island industrial site, just a stone's throw from where the BG Group would set up their LNG facility," explained Prince Rupert Port Authority spokesperson Michael Gurney, adding that the port authority is excited about this development because of the Petrona's international standing in the energy industry.

"We've been looking at this for a few months, having conversation and pre-feasibility talks, and I'm pleased that we've reached the point where the company is considering a feasibility study and is releasing this good news to the public."

According to a statement from the company, in addition to a feasibility agreement being signed with the port authority, more work has been taking place behind the scenes.

"We have begun engagement with relevant authorities and First Nations, as well as community groups, and we look forward to working closely with them in the course of our site investigation,"? said Datuk Anuar Ahmad, Executive Vice President of the gas and power business for PETRONAS.

"A key consideration in our investigation will be understanding the environmental and social impacts as well as ascertaining technical feasibility.?

Why Personal Training? - Enquire Today

?Use a Personal Trainer and ensure results.

Personal Training has long been thought of as the workout for the stars. Having received so much publicity in the past relating to the rich and famous its not hard to see why so many people today believe that Personal Training is not suited to their needs and financial constraints.

Personal Training is thought to be the easy way to train. The trainer prepares your workout, sets up the equipment, puts away the weights, tells you how to perform each exercise, makes sure your heart rate is in the training zone, teaches you new skills, corrects technique, and monitors your progress each and every day you train with them. What the trainer doesn?t do is lift the weights, run the hills, finish the abdominal exercises or ride the bike. The exercise you have to do your self. For those of you who train now without the guidance or instruction are the ones who train the easy way.

Training with a Personal Trainer ensures you do the training and in the correct way. No more cheating on exercises or stopping short in your run or risking the chance of injuring yourself due to poor technique. The trainer is there to make sure you train in the way that will give you the best results in the shortest time and in the most efficient manner.

How many people train for years wondering if they are training correctly, are the exercises appropriate, is their technique correct, are they overloading and progressing, is it safe and are they getting results?? The most frustrating thing about any form of training is why do it if it doesn?t work. Why get up each morning before light, put your body through a heavy workout, spend countless hours preparing your ?special diets? cut short your social life and give up on your favourite foods if you are not seeing any results.

Personal Training is all about getting results. When you have someone who is qualified and experienced in the areas of health and fitness working with you on a weekly basis, checking your training program and training techniques and adjusting as necessary, you will see results.?

Personal Training has become popular for this reason. Imagine training under the normal situation by your self or with a friend. Chances are you will start out okay and gradually ease of and end of dropping out. Motivation for a start is the main reason why we all start training because we have some idea or some goal we would like to achieve. When the results don?t happen overnight more often then not we make excuses and tend to give it up for something a little more rewarding. Training can achieve results and can be rewarding if it is done correctly and under the right guidance.

The benefits of Personal training are many. More motivation and better training commitment, faster results from a more time efficient program and better quality training, less risk of injury or over training, improved knowledge of exercise and health issues, and progressive and personalised programs that work for you. These are the main benefits from Personal Training.

When you have someone working with you on an individual basis each week the opportunity for you to succeed in reaching or achieving your training goals is vastly improved. Ask anyone who is currently using a Personal Trainer and you will find that most people are with a Personal trainer because they want to see something happen from the time they invest in their training, they want to spend less time for a better result and they want to ensure the training they are doing is right for them.

Personal training may involve training in a one on one situation for fat loss, toning, fitness, body shaping, body building, rehabilitation, aerobic skills for aerobic classes and sports specific conditioning. The training situation can be set up from a fitness centre or your own home. Training from home can be set up with your own equipment or with modified forms of resistance for strength work and aerobic work can be done in with a trainer in your own lounge. The popularity of Personal Trainers has seen people get together in groups of? 2 to 4? and between them employing a trainer to work from their home for the benefit of the group, whilst making it better value for each person.? Personal Training is worth considering if you feel you deserve that little bit of specialised care and attention for your training.

How do you ensure you find a good Personal Trainer??? Choose a college that commands success from its graduates.?

'Magic Mike' Stars: 'Male Objectification' Doesn't Exist

'I don't think anyone gets tired of screaming girls,' Alex Pettyfer tells MTV News.
By Kara Warner

Channing Tatum
Photo:

Oh, "Magic Mike" — we just can't seem to get enough info about this surprisingly complex comedy about male strippers.

The R-rated film is loosely based on star Channing Tatum's real-life stripper past, was directed by Oscar-winner Steven Soderbergh and features a very attractive ensemble cast including "True Blood" werewolf Joe Manganiello, "White Collar" star Matt Bomer, Alex Pettyfer and leading lady Cody Horn.

When MTV News caught up with the cast recently, we asked them to address the subject of male objectification and whether the guys felt any discomfort in playing sex objects or from all the screams and cat calls from the female extras in the audience for their stripping scenes.

"There's no such thing as male objectification, and I think that's what we're exposing with this movie," Manganiello said. "It doesn't exist. We really don't care. I think for the most part, it's just about having fun. It's like, 'Leave all that outside.' " "It's an interesting story to be a part of with an amazing director and a great cast that I've wanted to work with for a long time," Bomer added. "However that's going to be marketed and perceived is sort of out of our hands. We just had a great time telling the story."

"I want to be objectified, but I don't feel it," Pettyfer said.

Somehow, in the midst of all that unabashed admiration for their stripping, the guys just can't come to terms with any of that enthusiasm being negative, and we are almost inclined to agree. Relative newcomer Cody Horn, who plays Tatum's love interest and Pettyfer's sister in the film, offered an insightful perspective on the subject.

"They are objectified as a whole, as a group, but it was fun. It was fun as a girl to be a part of something that objectifies men," Horn said. "Because whether they know it or not, maybe that's just a testament to that they have no idea what it feels like. ... I think they had such fun doing it that it doesn't feel the same as when a woman is objectified."

"I don't think anyone gets tired of screaming girls," Pettyfer pointed out.

"It's high time that those tables be turned!" Bomer said.

Check out everything we've got on "Magic Mike."

(AP) ? Things aren't all dreamy in Katy Perry's new 3D concert film.

The pop star's energetic Day-Glo performances and chart success ? tying Michael Jackson's "Bad" with five No. 1 singles from her album "Teenage Dream" ? are undercut by heartbreak. She sobs uncontrollably backstage as her marriage to Russell Brand falls apart during her world tour, and talks about her dashed desire for "fairy tale" romance.

Perry co-produced "Katy Perry: Part of Me" and is now promoting it with the same energy she gave to the year-long "California Dreams" tour it documents. Like Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never," the movie cross-cuts between concert footage and biography. It includes interviews with Perry's friends, assistant, manager, makeup artist, Christian evangelical parents, and plenty of fans. Brand is on screen in several scenes but his presence is reduced by the end mostly to phone and text messages.

In an interview, Perry spoke about sharing her side of the breakup on-screen, leaning on her fans as "a support system," and plans for her next album.

____

The Associated Press: Your relationship with Russell Brand supplies the narrative arc of the film. It's very personal. You're crying on screen. Is it the same to you as doing a break-up song like "Wide Awake"?

Perry: Oh my God, I have tear ducts! Crazy! I am human! I think it was important for me to leave some of the more difficult things in the film so that it wasn't just a narcissistic fanfare film about how great I am. Because I'm not all great. There might be moments of greatness but they are very hard-worked (sic). I think it was important to show that there are obstacles and problems in people's lives and it's OK if you have them. You just have to overcome them. ... Sometimes if you want to achieve something great, there will be curveballs. You just have to dodge them every once in a while.

AP: There's a clip in the movie where you tell Ellen DeGeneres you're going to take a long nap when the tour is over. It seems like you never did. You never took a break.

Perry: I'm still having fun. When I thought of documenting this whole process of last year, I didn't know it was going to be a huge movie with billboards and Hollywood and stuff. But I just knew that there was a huge wave coming and I wanted to be able to forever keep the memory of that wave. So I caught everything. I threw the net out very wide. And at the end of it it was over 300-plus hours of film. And it turned into this movie. And I'm glad. Because it sends a great message, it's very inspiring and it's another kind of layer of me that I've revealed in time.

AP: At one point in the film, you're heartbroken and sobbing before going onstage in Brazil, where fans chant "We love you Katy" in Portuguese. The movie makes it feel like fan love replaces Russell Brand's love ? or at least helps you through the breakup.

Perry: Nothing was replaced. It was always there. ... Yeah, of course, it's a support system. It's exactly like when I was signed to major labels and dropped. And the guys that really didn't understand my artistic vision were like, "No, we're not going to put her record out." I packed up my things and went to Hotel Cafe, here in Los Angeles, which is a tiny venue. And I played my songs. ... And people were supporting these songs. And they were telling me that this was the right thing to do. So there is no void filled. It's just that it's always been there.

AP: You wonder in the film about whether you can have a relationship and a career. Do you feel like there is an answer to that?

Perry: The answer is always changing for me, you know, because every day is kind of a bit of a surprise. Sometimes it's a great opportunity, sometimes it's a situation I have to deal with. So I don't know. I still believe in love, most definitely. I'm just going to let that take the lead.

AP: Where are you at on the next album? Will there be a shift in your sound?

Perry: I don't want to completely self-sabotage everything that I've got and alienate everyone. But I definitely want to take some chances as I always have. And after the movie comes out, I think it'll be appropriate for me to go away for a while.

AP: Do you worry about getting overexposed?

Perry: I worry if it's not real. I'm OK if everything is honest and truthful and relatable. If it's fabricated and ill-motived, it's not good. But I don't try and involve myself in that type of stuff.

AP: What will change in your next phase in terms of balancing your public and private life?

Perry: I'll continue to try and balance like a circus act. And I will just fight to always tell the truth. Even if it's difficult.

Samsung's 27-inch Series 9 LED monitor hits US retailers

Samsung wasn't saying much about US availability when it showed off its new Series 9 monitor back at CES in January, but it's now finally confirmed that it will be available at a number of different retailers starting June 29th (following a brief "prelaunch" period with Newegg). Coming in at the expected $1,199.99, this one is a 16:9 LED PLS monitor, and it packs a suitably high-end 2560 x 1440 resolution along with most of the other features you'd expect from a $1,200 monitor: HDMI, DVI and a pair of USB ports, an all glass and metal enclosure, and support for MHL-enabled smartphones and tablets. Those curious can find a full rundown of the rest of the specs at the source link below.

How Virtual PBX Makes Home Business Startups More Professional ...

Using virtual PBX services can make any home business or start-up more professional, mainly because first impressions are extremely important for setting the right business tone or atmosphere for future communications with clients and customers. Even a small company or business can project a "big company" image by using these hosted PBX services to handle all communications associated with the day to day business operations of their companies.

PBX stands for "Private Branch Exchange" and refers to the old style switchboard which handled a company's communications in the not so distant past. Virtual PBX refers to modern day services or providers which are hosted on remote servers, far removed from a company's actual location. These virtual services are very comprehensive and can include voice mail, call-forwarding, online fax... as well as a virtual receptionist in some cases.

In other words, most if not all, of a company's communications can be directed or handled through a virtual PBX system. This can be an inexpensive way to consolidate all one's phone, email, fax... into one communication system. For any business just starting up, it can be a much cheaper alternative than putting in the extra phone and fax lines, buying the extra hardware and/or hiring a real receptionist for the front office.

Going the virtual route can be a great time and money saver for any start-up or home business. In addition, these services are very professionally run and this professionalism will boost your company's image in the eyes of potential clients and customers.

Virtual PBX is actually a form of "cloud computing" where these services are outsourced to third party providers. By using or outsourcing to one of these providers, such as the well known RingCentral, any company or start-up can be up and running within minutes. In return for a small monthly fee, these companies can have a professional phone/fax/receptionist system working 24/7 to handle all business communications.

While professionalism and economics may prove to be the two main reasons for going the virtual route, they are not the only reasons. Connecting all one's business communications with computers and the web, will make any company more efficient and viable in today's computer obsessed world. Clients and customers will be able to easily reach those companies using virtual PBX, anywhere and anytime, meaning these same companies will be open for business around the clock. For that last reason alone, any home business or start-up, must consider the feasibility of acquiring a virtual PBX service.

PFT: Marshall working toward new image

marvin-austin-story-gettyGetty Images

As the NFL deals with well over 2,000 former players who are suing for concussions, the league understandably hopes to slam the door on future lawsuits from current players.

In one specific regard, the league is failing.

An Outsides the Lines report from Bob Holtzman of ESPN creates the perception of a dog chasing its tail regarding the question of whether the NFL is properly embracing technological advances that will help spot whether players should exit a game due to head trauma.

After explaining the work of North Carolina professor Kevin Guskiewicz to use helmet sensors to record in real time the force of each and every blow to the head during practice or a game, Holtzman explained that the NFL isn?t ready to say when or if the Helmet Impact Telemetry (HIT) system will be used.? The league then referred Holtzman to its expert on these matters.

And their expert is ? you guessed it ? Kevin Guskiewicz.

?I?ve been comfortable with the questions that we?ve asked and the validation studies that have been done to this point, and I feel as though we probably could have had this system in place a year or so ago,? Guskiewicz said.

?It absolutely can work in the NFL,? he added regarding the system that North Carolina now uses as a recruiting tool.? ?I?ve been doing it for eight years, so I know it can be done.?

Guskiewicz explained that eight NFL teams planned to use the HIT system in 2010, and that the plug was pulled at the ?eleventh hour.?? Citing an unnamed source, Holtzman reports that the NFL Players Association blocked the use of the HIT system.? Holtzman added that the NFLPA did not respond to repeated requests for an interview.

NBC analyst Hines Ward, who spent 14 years with the Steelers, believes players will be reluctant about using the HIT system.? ??You?re gonna open up a while Pandora?s Box with it,? Ward told Holtzman.? ?For a doctor to read a computer and tell me how hard I?ve been hit and to pull me out of a game, that won?t sit well with a lot of players.?

Ward also worries that the data will be used by owners to justify paying players less money.

Regardless, the NFL?s expert is getting impatient.? ?If we?re sitting here in a year from now and we?re not any closer to have on-field, real-time biomechanics being measured, I?ll be real frustrated, and perhaps ready to throw the towel in,? Guskiewicz said.

Lawyers interested in representing current players in future concussion lawsuit are likely feeling anything but frustrated.? With the NFL?s expert believing that the technology could have been and should have been used in 2010 ? and upset by the fact that it?s still not currently in use ? any player who suffered concussions even after the NFL had a Congress-induced epiphany in October 2009 will be able to argue that, if the NFL merely had followed the advice of its expert and used the HIT system, the player would have been pulled from a game before real damage had been done.

The report that the NFLPA stopped the implementation of the technology in 2010 complicates matters for future plaintiffs.? But that one fact could mean that future concussion lawsuits will be filed not only against the NFL, but also against the union.? (To date, concussion suits have been filed only against the league.)

Regardless, any actual or perceived failure by the stewards of the game to do everything reasonably possible to reduce head injuries or avoid them altogether will provide fodder for an ongoing stream of litigation from the men who currently play the game.? And the league?s failure to follow the advice of Kevin Guskiewicz creates a far more tangible, clear, and defined risk of liability than the Saints bounty program ever could.

Family-to-Family links well-off families to others in need

Pam Koner started a nonprofit group that helps families who want to aid less-fortunate families.

It's difficult to say no to Pam Koner, say those who work with her: Her enthusiasm and drive are contagious.

Ms. Koner started her charity, Family-to-Family, in 2002 when she saw a newspaper article about Pembroke, Ill., which noted that 51 percent of families with children there were living below the poverty line.

She was shocked to read that the town had little in the way of infrastructure: no supermarket, no pharmacy, no bank. Many families lived in houses with dirt floors.

She immediately sprang into action and found families here in Hastings-on-Hudson, a small commuter village just 19 miles north of New York City, who wanted to help families in Pembroke. Soon food ? canned vegetables, fruit, spaghetti sauce, tuna ? was on its way.

Today Family-to-Family provides food to approximately 2,200 children and their families in 20 places around the United States. Some 400 volunteer families participate in 32 states. Many sign up at www.family-to-family.org.

Though the families who receive help from Family-to-Family are eligible for federal food stamps, the stamps are often spent before the last week of the month, forcing families to skip meals and go hungry, Koner says. This is when the food boxes are most needed: They can make the difference between eating and going without.

People are drawn to the program because it demands time and effort, Koner says, a deeper commitment than just a financial donation. "One common thing participating people have said is, 'I've been looking for something to do with my family that is not about writing a check," she says.

To date, Family-to-Family has supplied more than 1.2 million meals. Each month members across the US pack boxes filled with seven days' worth of nonperishable food items along with a letter to their sponsored family. The box is shipped to a volunteer in the receiving community, who then takes it to the family in need.

Lori Ratner of Stamford, Conn., has been a sponsor since 2004, when she read an article about Koner and Family-to-Family.

"For the past eight years, we have sponsored a wonderful family in Kermit, W.Va.," Ms. Ratner says. "These parents raised five children, and when a relative was unable to care for her two little girls, the family took the girls in [too] and has been raising them?.

"Although they themselves were not in a very comfortable [financial] position, they still opened their home and hearts to these kids. I cannot begin to express how grateful I am to Family-to-Family. We have learned that what we may take for granted, something as simple as a jar of peanut butter, may help a family from going hungry."

Koner's work has gained the attention and appreciation of local leaders.

Fremd, Washington receive OHHS's Athlete of the Year honor

Move over Captain Kirk, Oak Harbor High School's 2012 Athletes of the Year, Jennifer Fremd and Mike Washington Jr., "boldly went where no man (or woman) has gone before."

Fremd was the first female to play football for Oak Harbor for four years and the first to appear in a varsity game. In addition, she was a standout wrestler and competed for the Wildcat tennis team.

Washington Jr. set an OHHS career basketball scoring record and was among the leading football receivers for the Wildcats the past three years.

While Fremd's football experience may be her most unique exploit, her primary focus was on the wrestling mat. She qualified for state two times, finishing fifth as a junior and third as a senior.

Her impact went beyond the state podium. Head wrestling coach Mike Crebbin said, "Jen brought leadership to our program by example. Every drill, every practice, every match, she gave her best and strove to improve. Jen is a quiet warrior."

Crebbin praised Fremd's work ethic and called her "a tough competitor." He noted she would be upset if she couldn't practice when she was sick or injured and "would run the extra sprints while battling to control her asthma."

Assistant coach Larry Falcon, who guided the girls in the OHHS program, said, "Jennifer has been an instrumental part of the growing women?s wrestling program at OHHS?She was a quiet leader, led by example, pushed her team by pushing herself? Her perseverance and dedication to the sport of wrestling has set the quiet standard for all women in the program.

"She climbed many obstacles that many could only aspire to. She made them reality and tangible for not only herself, but also for others."

Fremd's qualities were also evident in football and tennis.

Football coach Jay Turner said, "Jen was an extremely hard worker, never missed practice and always had a positive attitude."

Tennis coach Horace Mells said Fremd worked her way from a beginner as a freshman to No. 3 singles as a senior and called her a "team player" and a "valuable asset" to his program. This spring she posted a 9-3 singles record and was the second Wildcat to reach the 90-mile-per-hour Club with a 94 MPH serve.

Fremd said she was "kind of surprised" she received the Athlete of the Year honor and would have never considered it four years ago when she started. She said she "worked hard" and invested many hours into activities she "didn't naturally excel at."

She said the sports "have become something close to my heart and being, so it means a lot to get this honor."

Of all her accomplishments, she is most proud of being named wrestling team captain: "That's a serious title and I feel one that I had to earn."

Fremd said Oak Harbor athletes are "seriously lucky to have such a great group of coaches, at least in football, wrestling and tennis."

"Not one of the football coaches," she said, "even batted an eye when I turned in my paperwork. None of them thought any less of me, expected less of me or treated me any differently than they did the other guys."

She said Falcon was her first wrestling coach in middle school and the one who "pushed me to work harder if I wanted to get better, as well as one who supported me through a lot of it."

She emphasized that the wrestling team as a whole, the athletes and coaches, encouraged her to excel and treated her as a member of the family.

In regard to the wrestling coaches, she said, "You aren't just some kid but one of their kids."

She said Mells taught technique, listened to the team and was willing to get involved in "our shenanigans."

Fremd, who chose the unusual path of playing football and wrestling, said, "Sports have no bias by themselves to male or female, their law is ruled by those with the will to compete and the work ethic to back it up."

Fremd now heads to Quinnipiac University in Connecticut where she will major in biology and play rugby.

Washington Jr. will also head East for college, playing basketball for Princeton University in New Jersey.

Washington was the second four-year varsity basketball starter for the Wildcats in the past 50 years and broke the school scoring record of the other, Brannon Stone, rimming in 1,526 points. Stone scored 1,427 from 1994 to '98.

Washington earned all-league honors all four years, including first-team as a junior and senior. This year he was one of 30 Washington players nominated for the national McDonald's all-star game.

He scored 41 points in a game this winter, the second most in school history, and hit 40 in a game as a junior.

Washington Jr. was coached by his father, Mike Washington Sr., who said of his son: "He brought a desire to compete and work hard all the time to our program. He was someone that could score 30 on any given night. Even when we were down in games, he always gave his all, even when he was sick. He will be missed."

Washington Jr. decided to give football a try his sophomore year and immediately made an impact, earning second-team all-league. This fall he was second on the team in receptions, yardage and receiving touchdowns and All-Wesco 3A honorable mention.

Turner said, "Obviously Mike is very gifted athletically, but to me his biggest asset to our team was his leadership. He was always a leader in games, during practices and, more importantly, in the classroom. In order to have success on the field you have to have athletes, but you also have to have strong leadership from the seniors, and Mike brought this every day."

Since he will be playing basketball in college, Washington Jr. said what he will most miss about competing for Oak Harbor High School will be "Friday nights (football); there is nothing like it."

He will also miss playing basketball with his sophomore brother Drew: "We complemented each other well on the court. When I was having an off night, he was there to pick up the slack. When we were both on, like when we upset ninth-ranked Shorewood, we were tough to beat."

Although he broke the school scoring record, he is most proud of "maintaining a high GPA while competing year round." Washington Jr. graduated with a 3.989 grade point average. "I got an A-minus in geometry my freshman year," he said. "I think it was the highest grade in the class."

"I am happy with the scoring record," he said, "but I am more proud that we got to go to the playoffs twice and to be a part of that." Oak Harbor qualified for district the past two seasons; the first back-to-back appearances since 1992 and '93.

He identified his parents, Mike Sr. and Rebecca, and football coaches Turner and Mike Fisher as having the biggest impact on his success: "Whether I had a problem in school or in general, I could go to them."

He will major in economics at Princeton and will travel there in July to begin early workouts. As of now the 6-3 guard does not plan to redshirt. He said the coaches told him could see some playing time as a freshman. "They said it is up to me and how hard I work," Washington Jr. said.

Italy held to 1-1 draw by Croatia in Group C

(AP) ? After all the talk about an attacking approach to football, Italy fell back to its old defensive tactics Thursday ? and the price was a costly 1-1 draw with Croatia.

The Italians let a first-half lead slip away and now may need help to advance to the European Championship quarterfinals.

Andrea Pirlo gave the Italians the lead with a curving free kick in the 39th minute, but Mario Mandzukic was left unmarked to equalize for Croatia in the 72nd.

At the start of the second half, Italy rarely threatened, instead choosing to absorb Croatia's attacks. The tactic backfired when Ivan Strinic launched a long pass from the left flank to Mandzukic, who had time to control at the edge of the box and shoot in off the post.

Italy coach Cesare Prandelli was left wondering if there was a physical problem with his squad.

"After an hour our physical level drops," Prandelli said. "We've got to figure out how to manage our energy in the next match. We're lacking freshness in that phase of the match.

"We (drew) with a very physical and athletic squad, but we played much better (than Croatia)."

Italy had numerous other first-half chances from Mario Balotelli, Claudio Marchisio and Antonio Cassano, but the Azzurri lacked finishing quality. Balotelli, in particular, appeared hesitant and missed one opportunity after another. And this time, second-half replacement Antonio Di Natale never really had a chance to score.

"If you can't finish it off, of course you're going to have regrets," said Prandelli, who will likely be questioned for sticking with Balotelli up front.

Having opened with a 3-1 win over Ireland, Croatia has four points and is tied for the Group C lead with Spain. Italy, which opened by drawing 1-1 with Spain, has two points and Ireland has already been eliminated with none.

Spain beat Ireland 4-0 in the other group match Thursday.

"Probably the whole country was not expecting this," Croatia coach Slaven Bilic said. "We have a really good chance of going through."

In the final round of group matches on Monday, Italy faces Ireland and Croatia meets world champion Spain. Italy is in a similar position to Euro 2004, when it won its final group match after two draws but was eliminated after Denmark and Sweden drew 2-2. That was the first time a team was eliminated from the group phase without losing.

"I am still convinced we can go through, but we have certainly wasted an opportunity here," Prandelli said.

For his goal, Pirlo placed the ball over Croatia's three-man wall and just inside the near post. Croatia goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa could only get a weak hand on it once the ball was already inside his net.

"I'm happy for the goal but it's a shame for the team performance, because we could have won the game," Pirlo said. "We had chances to finish the game off in the first half but couldn't put the ball in the back of the net."

Italy remains winless against its Mediterranean neighbor in all six meetings since Croatia declared independence from the former Yugoslavia in 1991. The Azzurri are also now winless in their second matches at their last six major tournaments.

Before the match, Croatian fans burned a European Union flag and paraded around Poznan's main old town square with posters of a convicted war criminal. Police, some in riot gear, monitored the situation, but did not intervene.

Already being investigated for fan behavior in the first match, Croatian supporters again threw flares on the field several times in the second half. After Croatia scored, the smoke was so intense that Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon complained he couldn't see and the match was briefly suspended.

On a damp and cool evening at the Municipal Stadium in Poznan, Croatian fans outfitted like their red-and-white checkered flag vastly outnumbered Italian supporters.
