Bonjour!

I frequently hear parents as well as educators who apparently believe that exposing their children to two or more languages will only confuse them. Research has demonstrated that ?during the first 8 years of life, the foundations for thinking, language, vision, attitudes, aptitudes and other characteristics are laid down.? (Kotulak, 1996). In the first 12 years the brain is a ?super sponge?, after that once the development is complete, the window closes and any further learning has to be gained through long and hard traditional learning. So yes, the younger your kids are exposed to another language, the better they will learn.

Unfortunately here in Ireland, students are usually not introduced to French as a 2nd or 3rd language until secondary school around the age of 12 or 13.

As a native French speaker originally from Paris, I have been instructing French in Ireland over the past 14 years. I have mainly been introducing the French language & culture to children of all ages starting from 2 years old, through the use of games and play as it is proven that children absorb a language much quicker while having fun. I also enjoy teaching teenagers, young adults and ?not so young? adults (my oldest student was 89 years old and one of the best! along with the 2 year old). I also have experience teaching in secondary classes to all levels from 1st year to Leaving Cert.

I meet so many teenagers who are struggling with learning French and even those who initially like the language in 1st or 2nd year, often find it challenging and hard to keep up after their Junior Cert. Some students have the opportunity to travel to France on an exchange program and hugely benefit from the 2-3 weeks immersion in the language, but not everyone is that lucky and we can?t expect all parents to pay for French grinds.

As a parent myself I believe in offering affordable French grinds solutions for everyone, and as a teacher I believe it?s important to connect with each student, to personalize their learning experience and enhance their confidence and ability to learn.

VIENA (Reuters) - Un grupo de piratas inform?ticos opositores a Israel, al que la agencia nuclear de la ONU acus? esta semana de haber publicado en internet datos robados de uno de sus servidores, dijo en una nueva declaraci?n que hab?a difundido material confidencial obtenido del organismo supervisor.

El comunicado firmado por el grupo -que tiene un nombre que suena iran?- fue publicado en un sitio de internet horas despu?s que el jefe del organismo at?mico de la ONU, Yukiya Amano, dijera el jueves que no cre?a que hubiera informaci?n nuclear sensible comprometida entre los datos robados.

La Agencia Internacional de Energ?a At?mica (IAEA), cuya misi?n es prevenir la dispersi?n de armas nucleares en el mundo y que est? investigando pol?micas actividades nucleares de Ir?n, prefiri? no hacer comentarios el viernes sobre los ?ltimos acontecimientos.

El domingo, los hackers publicaron en un sitio de internet docenas direcciones de correo electr?nico de expertos que han estado trabajando con la agencia de la ONU, e instaron a la IAEA a que investigue la actividad nuclear de Israel.

Morality-based judgments are quicker, more extreme than practical evaluations

Judgments made after a moral evaluation are quicker and more extreme than the same judgment based on practical considerations, but morality-based evaluations can be more easily shifted and made with other considerations in mind, according to research published November 28 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Jay Van Bavel and colleagues from New York University.

Previous research has suggested that moral reasoning usually occurs after a person makes a decision, as a post hoc justification of their choice, rather than the basis for the decision itself. This new study suggests that people can evaluate choices using either moral or non-moral considerations, and this can lead to different choices for the same actions.

For example, participants in the study were given actions that are typically evaluated in a moral context, such as murder, and non-moral actions, such as riding a bike or buying organic food, and asked to evaluate each in both a pragmatic and a moral sense. They were also asked to choose how strongly they would advocate the action to others.

The authors found that participants had different responses to the same decision depending on whether or not it was framed as a moral or pragmatic choice. They found that moral evaluations were faster, more extreme and more strongly associated with universal prescriptions ("everybody/nobody should" statements) than non-moral or pragmatic evaluations of the same actions. In addition, the authors also found that people took longer to decide on such universal prescriptions when asked to evaluate them in a pragmatic rather than moral context.

According to the authors, their results suggest that deciding to frame any issue as moral or not may have important consequences. They say, "Once an issue is declared moral, people's judgments about that issue become more extreme, and they are more likely to apply those judgments to others."
