UN council threatens sanctions on Mali fighters

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? The U.N. Security Council has passed a resolution threatening sanctions against Islamist fighters in northern Mali.

The resolution passed Monday expresses concern about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Mali and demands the restoration of constitutional order following a March 21 coup.

The resolution condemns Ansar Dine, or "Protectors of the Faith," for destroying the heritage of the ancient city of Timbuktu. It calls for blacklisting anyone associated with al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb.

France's U.N. Ambassador Gerard Araud said the council awaits an official request by the West African body ECOWAS for a mandate for a proposed stabilization force. Araud said finances for a mission must be discussed, and the council would not give ECOWAS "carte blanche."

Ansar Dine seized Timbuktu last week after ousting a Tuareg rebel faction.

Griffin Schaefer was a man of mystery last season.

That?s because it was anybody?s guess where he was going to play on the offensive line.

As a junior, Schaefer lined up at four of the five positions, everywhere except center. But the rising senior at Maine South is looking forward to a permanent home this year at right guard.

?It was really an experience last year,? said Schaefer, who measures 6-foot-2 and 265 pounds. ?I had to know every play for all those positions, but I was happy to fill those positions.?

Nevertheless, Schaefer, one of five linemen with significant varsity experience back for the Hawks, isn?t complaining about staying put for his final season.

?It?s comforting to know that,? the three-year varsity veteran said. ?I won?t have to learn on the fly anymore, and I am able to understand more about one position.

?Perfecting one position will be substantial in my success.?

The Maine South line showed off its talents last week at Wheaton Warrenville South?s 7-on-7 tournament by winning the linemen challenge. The 10 events included tire flips, 45-pound plate hold, obstacle course and tug of war.

The Hawks skill players ? led by quarterback and tournament MVP Matt Alviti ? made it to the semifinals and finished 7-2. Upstart Elk Grove, playing under new coach Larry Calhoun, won the tournament by beating Glenbard North.

Alviti, a Northwestern recruit, will count on the big boys up front as Maine South strives to return to its winning ways in the postseason.

?Nothing?s been forgotten about last year,? Schaefer said of Maine South?s exit in the second round that ended the team?s run of three consecutive state championships. ?But we are not dwelling on it.?

Mike Rubino, another returning starter on the line, shared Schaefer?s resolve. Rubino, a 6-4, 265-pound senior, said everybody learned something from last year.

Rubino also finally has a home this season. After playing center for part of last year, he?s now at right tackle.

?It?s different,? he said. ?The pass-blocking is harder, but I think I can handle it. I have less things to worry about.?

Rubino did agree that blocking for Alviti, a serial scrambler, comes with its challenges.

?Yes,? he laughed. ?I never know where he?s going to be.?

Others back on line this summer include Pat Maloney, Dan Poulos and Danny Nordstrom. At 6-3, 275 pounds, Maloney holds several Division I offers from mid-major programs.

?We?ve been working hard this summer to improve everything about ourselves,? Schaefer said. ?We want to be successful again.?

Higgs boson explained in (more than) a minute

Minute Physics creator Henry Reich doesn't shrink from tackling the big bang and other big deals in science, so it makes sense that he's now making sense of the Higgs boson. His timing is excellent, considering that the subatomic particle appears to have been discovered at Europe's $10 billion Large Hadron Collider. In today's three-minute video, Minute Physics explains how the Higgs boson subatomic particle fits into the bigger puzzle of the universe's structure at the lowest level ... and why physicists hope this isn't the end of the story.

But be forewarned: This is the first part of what's expected to be a three-part video series. And although Reich is well-versed in film as well as physics, this isn't a one-man operation. Reich relies on experts at Canada's Perimeter Institute for support and scientific back-stopping. So stay tuned for future installments of Minute Physics' Higgs boson saga.

The Godless Particle
Notice that the video makes no mention of the Higgs boson as the "God particle." That's a label that Nobel-winning physicist gave to the god-danged particle decades ago, but since then, scientists have come to loathe the term. In fact, the boson is better described as the "Godless Particle," says Lawrence Krauss, a theoretical physicist at Arizona State University. Here's his perspective, distilled into an email:

?The Higgs boson actually should probably be called the Godless particle. The background 'Higgs' field permeates all of space and is largely responsible for the existence of stars, planets and humans. The confirmation of the existence of this field strongly supports what modern physics has said for years: The many features of our universe can be largely accidental consequences of the conditions associated with the universe?s 'birth,' consistent with the laws of physics.

"Far from suggesting any higher power, the discovery at CERN takes particle physics one step further toward answering the question: 'Why is there something rather than nothing?' ? by demonstrating the plausibility of the idea that everything we see could arise naturally from an initial state of no particles, and maybe no space, and maybe even no fixed laws ? without supernatural shenanigans."

A rising chorus of voices, inside and outside Washington, is warning that political gridlock in Congress is now so severe that it has actually done damage to the economy ? and threatens to do a lot more.

President Obama, of course, is the chief "blame Congress" finger-pointer, perhaps to be expected as he fights to win reelection as the economy flails. But plenty of others ? Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, the US Chamber of Commerce, and Congress's own budget office, to name a few ? also cite Congress as a factor that is inhibiting economic recovery, though they put it more diplomatically than does Mr. Obama.

Consider Mr. Bernanke's reply to lawmakers when asked June 7 about Fed efforts to stimulate the economy via low interest rates: "I'd be much more comfortable," he said, if "Congress would take some of this burden from us and address those issues."

Or take this complaint about how "uncertainty" is causing small businesses to refrain from hiring and investing. "Most of this uncertainty ... is coming out of Washington," concludes a June 14 report from the National Federation of Independent Business.

Then there's this tart assessment from the Congressional Budget Office about the consequences of lawmakers leaving unresolved some pressing decisions about future taxes and government spending. "Uncertainty about the resolution of fiscal policy early next year is weighing on the economy, we think, diminishing people's and businesses' spending this year," said CBO Director Douglas Elmendorf in June.

Wait a minute, you say? What about the debt crisis in Europe? What about the long-suffering housing market and the costs of "Obamacare"? What about layoffs in state and local governments? What about lack of presidential leadership, perhaps? Are they not to blame for the US economy running out of steam?

True, say many economists, some or all of the above contribute. But evidence is mounting that Washington's food fight last summer over raising the nation's debt limit and the "fiscal cliff" that looms at year's end are taking a toll on economic growth and employment. And both are crises manufactured in large part by an ineffective Congress.

"This economy can gain traction and really swing into full gear if we just nail down what we're going to do about the fiscal cliff and attaining fiscal sustainability," says Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody's Analytics.

That's a big "if," if recent history is a guide.

Field Trip: Can Corals Survive Warming Ocean Temperatures? [Slide Show]

Data from remote coral reefs in the central Pacific suggest that, although many corals are harmed by heat, certain kinds can adapt to warmer water

The long-term survival of coral reefs will depend on how well they can deal with rising ocean temperatures. Corals, the animals that famously build reefs, get most of their energy and color from microscopic algae that live inside their tissue. This unique arrangement is very sensitive to the surroundings, however. When the water gets too warm, the corals expel or consume the algae, and turn white. If the warm water persists, this "bleaching" process can starve corals to death.

In May I traveled from my lab at the University of British Columbia to the Gilbert Islands, part of the island nation of Kiribati, in the central equatorial Pacific. They offer a unique natural laboratory for studying how coral reefs respond to frequent ocean heat waves. When an El Ni?o climate event sets up in the Pacific, the ocean around Kiribati?in the heart of the El Ni?o zone?warms up. By studying changes in the coral community after El Ni?o events, we can evaluate what types of corals and reef habitats are most likely to survive in a warmer future.

During this trip, my colleagues at Kiribati's Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resource Development and I measured coral cover and the fish population at sites around four different atolls. We began alongside Tarawa Atoll, the densely populated capital of Kiribati, and proceeded northward for 160 kilometers, ending up in the remote Butaritari Atoll. Because Kiribati is a remote country with limited access to Western goods, few outside visitors and no fancy research vessels, field work there requires patience, flexibility and a strong stomach.

We are now analyzing the data to test our suspicion that certain "tough" coral species are spreading at sites with a history of frequent, strong El Ni?o?based heat waves. These sites could be the rare exception to the scientific prediction that the world's coral reefs will succumb to climate change before the end of this century.
