I believe I?ve made it clear how I feel about relationship advice. Mostly, I find it utterly unhelpful. I think that relationships are so complicated and personal, that advice is not one person fits all. I especially hate gimmicky, quick-fix relationship advice that?s like ?The Magic Thing That Will Get You Married In 364 Days!? WORST! The only brand of dating advice I can stomach is the kind that?s empowering. And when I stumble upon it, I share it with you.

Last week, I had coffee with a good friend. We both started dating new guys we met online on the exact same day. (Weird, right?) That was a few months ago, and both relationships are still on and popping. During our coffee session, one of the things we talked about was how we both were having persistent, irrational anxiety about our relationships suddenly ending. Our shades of anxiety were a bit different. Mine has been taking the form of a recurring fear of being dumped out-of-the-blue.

The script in my head goes like this:

He didn?t text me back. That must mean he?s going to dump me. He said he wants to tell me about something. Is he going to dump me? He told me he needs to push back our meeting time for tonight. He must be thinking about dumping me.

OK. Now, you know my shameful self-script. I know it?s ridiculous. It?s not based in reality. It has nothing to do with my guy or his behavior. He didn?t text me back because he was?sleeping.?He wanted to tell me about something that happened?at work.?He pushed back our meeting time because he wanted to?clean his apartment before I came over.

My fears are based on things that have happened to me in the past. Specifically, the several times I got dumped out-of-the-blue, twice by people I was in unabashedly in love with. My way of dealing with the past hurt was to be hyper-vigilant in all future relationships. I?m constantly afraid I?m missing a sign or a cue like I might have in the past.

I?ve diagnosed myself with Post Traumatic Dating Disorder. Not to make light in any way of the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and it?s severe and often debilitating symptoms, but years of relationship disappointments can create their own emotionally traumatic side-effects. This particular brand of insanity, I blame on my PTDD.

Pursuant to our conversation, my friend sent me a relationship advice column, unearthed from the deep recesses of the internet, entitled?Dr. Rob?s Simple Advice To Ladies So You Don?t Get Dumped.

When asked for some advice to help women in their relationships Dr.?Rob Dobrenski, Ph.D.?says:

?A few years ago a large portion of my clientele was women, aged 21-35 or so. Most of them had what seemed to be potentially great relationships with their boyfriends. However, all the women had a common feature: a need ? for constant reassurance of the relationship?s stability ? The women would come to me seeking ways to lower their anxiety levels, feel less jealous about ex-girlfriends, develop ways to not freak out that their partner didn?t say ?I love you? often enough. I will tell you exactly what I told each of them ?There are no magic words, no breathing or muscle relaxation techniques, no amount of drugs (recreational or medicinal) that can take away all of the angst and distress if you insist on making a small number of erroneous and perhaps not entirely conscious assumptions.?

So what are these erroneous assumptions that are preventing women from enjoying our potentially great relationships? According to Dr. Rob the main one is that there is such a thing as a ?guarantee? in relationships or life in general.

NAIL ON HEAD. It?s fucking scary to think about losing someone you?ve really started to like. Instead of coming to terms with this, I?ve been putting all my energy into micro-monitoring every single word exchanged between me and the boy instead of dealing with the real issue: the terrifying truth that there are no guarantees in life. I?ve been wasting my time. I need to stop.

But there is hope for me. Dr. Rob goes on to say:

?The good news is that once you?ve eliminated the aforementioned assumptions from your mind set, all the ?symptoms? will go away. No more worry ? finally some fucking inner peace. Why? Because you?ll know that while it?s painful to lose someone important to you, loss is a part of life and that you can be okay with that fact. You can and will move forward, as hard as it may be.?

Dr. Rob, I don?t know you, but can I hug you?

Barnes & Noble says PIN pads in 63 stores hacked

NEW YORK (AP) ? Barnes & Noble Inc. said Tuesday that devices used by customers to swipe credit and debit cards have been tampered with in 63 of its stores in nine states.

The company warned customers to check for unauthorized transactions and to change their personal identification numbers, or PINs. It didn't say how many accounts may have been compromised.

But The New York Times, citing a high-ranking company official it did not name, reported that hackers had made unauthorized purchases on some customer credit cards.

The New York-based bookseller said in a statement Tuesday only one of the devices, known as PIN pads, was tampered with in each of the 63 stores. The stores are in California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

All the PIN pads in its nearly 700 stores nationwide were disconnected on Sept. 14 after the company learned of the tampering. Federal authorities are helping in its investigation.

Barnes & Noble said it is working with banks and card issuers to identify compromised accounts so that additional fraud-protection measures can be taken.

Customers at its book stores will now have to ask cashiers to swipe credit or debit cards on card readers connected to cash registers, a process that is secure, Barnes & Noble said.

Anything bought on Barnes & Noble.com or with the chain's Nook devices and app were not affected, the company said. It also said its customer database is secure.

Barnes & Noble is only the latest major retailer to be a victim of a serious data breach. In one of the largest, more than 45 million credit and debit cards were exposed to possible fraud because of hackers who broke into the computer system of TJX Cos., the parent company of retailers T.J. Maxx and Marshall's, starting in 2005.

Obama renews focus on second-term agenda

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama, bowing to pressure from Republicans and some Democrats, is launching an effort to define his second-term agenda as the White House race barrels toward the finish.

The broad effort includes new television advertisements, direct mail to voters in battleground states and a sharper emphasis in Obama's campaign speeches on the next four years. Most of the plans are economic-focused, including boosting manufacturing, spending more on education and raising taxes on upper-income earners ? all of which previously have been announced.

"We're not there yet. But we've made real progress and the last thing we should do is turn back now," Obama says in a new 60-spot released Tuesday morning, hours after the final presidential debate.

With just two weeks until Election Day and voting under way in many states, the ad and the second-term push amount to Obama's closing argument. Campaign aides are banking on the strategy to woo the narrow band of undecided voters, as well as those who shifted their support to Republican Mitt Romney after his strong performance in the first debate on Oct. 3.

Romney, buoyed by that burst of momentum, has stepped up his criticism of Obama's plans for a second term, accusing the Democrat of failing to say what he would do with four more years. And the Republican's campaign didn't temper its critique following the announcement of Obama's new second-term push.

"The president is just doubling down on the same policies that have led to a stagnant economy, greater government dependency and trillion dollar deficits," said Amanda Henneberg, a Romney spokeswoman.

Polls show the Republican gained nationally after the first debate. But Obama advisers insist they maintain an edge in key battleground states, including Ohio, where every Republican has needed to win in order to claim the presidency.

Obama was joining Vice President Joe Biden for a rally Tuesday in Dayton, Ohio, after the president's morning appearance in Florida.

At both stops, Obama is expected to push his second-term agenda. More details on the plan are included in a 20-page booklet called "Blueprint for America's Future" and released Tuesday. Officials say copies of the booklet will be handed out to voters in battleground states.

Obama aides say the race remains competitive in nine states: Ohio, Florida, Virginia, New Hampshire, Iowa, North Carolina, Colorado, Nevada and Wisconsin.

Steelers receiver Emmanuel Sanders gave the rest of the NFL a clear lesson in how to save a timeout by employing poor sportsmanship on Sunday night, faking an injury to give his team time to get the right personnel on the field.

With the Steelers facing third-and-11 with six minutes left in the game, Pittsburgh wanted to substitute but didn?t have time to do it without picking up a delay of game penalty. So Sanders ? one of the players who was supposed to come off ? simply fell to the ground pretending to be hurt, which caused a clock stoppage that allowed the Steelers to get the correct personnel on the field.

It was incredibly obvious that Sanders was faking, but it became ridiculously obvious when Sanders went right back on the field just one play later. NBC?s Cris Collinsworth and Al Michaels both noticed that Sanders was faking immediately, and Michaels noted that the league office might have something to say about it.

Based on what the league office has said in the past, Sanders should have to explain himself. Last season, when two Giants players obviously faked an injury in a game against the Rams, the NFL distributed a memo saying, in part, ?all those suspected of being involved in faking injuries will be summoned promptly to this office.?

Well, now Sanders is suspected of being involved in faking injuries. But NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told PFT that Sanders wasn?t summoned to the league office, or disciplined in any other way. However, the situation is still being reviewed by the league office.

As I wrote at the time of the Giants? fake injury controversy, faking injuries is a time-honored practice in football. It dates at least to 1953, when a Notre Dame team was dubbed the ?Fainting Irish? after faking an injury to get a free timeout that set up a tying touchdown on the last play of a game against Iowa. But the fact that fake injuries have been around for more than half a century doesn?t make them acceptable. And since the NFL has warned teams not to do it, there?s no reason for the NFL not to act now that Sanders has obviously done it.

It would stink to see the NFL become like soccer, where players are constantly flopping to the turf with phony injuries. But if the NFL doesn?t crack down, things could head in that direction. The example that Sanders set on Sunday night is clear: If you want a free timeout, just fake an injury. The referee and the league office won?t do anything about it.

GENEVA (AP) ? Seven lines of blanks. From 1999 to 2005. There will be no Tour de France winner in the record book for those years.

Once the toast of the Champs-Elysees, Lance Armstrong was formally stripped of his seven Tour titles Monday and banned for life for doping.

As far as the Tour is concerned, his victories never happened. He was never on the top step of the podium. The winner's yellow jersey was never on his back.

The decision by the International Cycling Union marked an end to the saga that brought down the most decorated rider in Tour history and exposed widespread cheating in the sport.

"Lance Armstrong has no place in cycling, and he deserves to be forgotten in cycling," said Pat McQuaid, president of the governing body. "Make no mistake, it's a catastrophe for him, and he has to face up to that."

It's also devastating for Tour de France organizers, who have to carve seven gaping holes from the honor roll of the sport's biggest event and airbrush Armstrong's image from a sun-baked podium on the Champs-Elysees.

No more rides through Paris for the grim-faced cancer survivor bearing the American flag. No champagne. From the sport's perspective, it's all gone.

"We wish that there is no winner for this period," Tour director Christian Prudhomme said Monday in Paris. "For us, very clearly, the titles should remain blank. Effectively, we wish for these years to remain without winners."

Armstrong's fiercely defended reputation as a clean athlete was shattered by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency two weeks ago, when it detailed evidence of drug use and trafficking by his Tour-winning teams. USADA released its report to show why it ordered Armstrong banned from competition back in August. Monday's judgment by the UCI was just the necessary next legal step to formalize the loss of his titles and expel him from the sport.

It will likely also trigger painful financial hits for Armstrong as race organizers and former sponsors line up to reclaim what are now viewed as his ill-gotten rewards, though the cyclist maintains he never doped.

Prudhomme wants Armstrong to pay back prize money from his seven wins, which the French cycling federation tallied at ?2.95 million ($3.85 million). Armstrong also once was awarded $7.5 million plus legal fees from Dallas-based SCA Promotions Inc., which tried to withhold paying a bonus for the rider's 2004 Tour victory after it alleged he doped to win.

The U.S. government could also get involved in a case brought by Floyd Landis, who was key to taking down his illustrious former teammate by turning whistleblower in 2010.

The losses pile up for a man who dedicated himself to victory, over other cyclists and the cancer that almost killed him in 1996.

Neither Armstrong nor his representatives had any comment about Monday's decision, but the rider was defiant in August when he chose not to fight USADA in one of the agency's arbitration hearings. He argued the process was rigged against him.

"I know who won those seven Tours, my teammates know who won those seven Tours, and everyone I competed against knows who won those seven Tours," Armstrong said then. "The toughest event in the world where the strongest man wins. Nobody can ever change that."

The condemnation by McQuaid, cycling's most senior official, confirmed Armstrong's pariah status, after the UCI had backed him at times in trying to seize control of the doping investigation from USADA.

McQuaid announced that the UCI accepted the sanctions imposed by USADA and would not appeal them to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. His board will meet Friday to discuss going after Armstrong's 2000 Olympic bronze medal and the possibility of setting up a "Truth and Reconciliation" commission to air the sport's remaining secrets.

"WADA is encouraged that the UCI feels it can use this case as a catalyst to thoroughly clean up its sport and remove any remaining vestiges of the doping programs that have clearly damaged cycling over the last decade," World Anti-Doping Agency President John Fahey said in a release.

The International Olympic Committee said it would study the UCI's response and wait to receive its full decision before possibly taking away Armstrong's medal from the Sydney Games time trial.

"It is good to see that all parties involved in this case are working together to tackle this issue," the IOC said.

McQuaid said he was "sickened" by some of the evidence detailed by USADA in its 200-page report and hundreds of pages of supporting testimony and documents.

USADA said Armstrong was at the center of "the most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program that sport has ever seen" within his U.S. Postal Service and Discovery Channel teams.

The American agency welcomed the decision by UCI.

"Today, the UCI made the right decision in the Lance Armstrong case," USADA CEO Travis Tygart said in a statement, which called on cycling to continue to fight doping. "There are many more details of doping that are hidden, many more doping doctors, and corrupt team directors and the omerta has not yet been fully broken."

The USADA report said Armstrong and his teams used steroids, the blood booster EPO and blood transfusions. The report included statements from 11 former teammates who testified against Armstrong, including that he pressured them to take banned drugs.

In all, 26 people ? including 15 riders ? testified to USADA that Armstrong and his teams used and trafficked banned substances and routinely used blood transfusions. Among the witnesses were loyal sidekick George Hincapie and admitted dopers Landis and Tyler Hamilton.

McQuaid singled out former teammate David Zabriskie, saying: "The story he told of how he was coerced and to some extent forced into doping is just mind-boggling."

Armstrong denies doping, saying he passed hundreds of drug tests, as many as 500. UCI conducted 218 tests and there were another 51 by USADA, although they are not the only drug-testing bodies.

"At the moment Lance Armstrong hasn't admitted to anything, yet all the evidence is there in this report that he doped," McQuaid said.

While drug use allegations have followed the 41-year-old Armstrong throughout much of his career, the USADA report has badly damaged his reputation. Longtime sponsors Nike, Trek Bicycles and Anheuser-Busch dropped him last week, and Armstrong also stepped down as chairman of Livestrong, the cancer awareness charity he founded 15 years ago after surviving testicular cancer that spread to his lungs and brain.

After the UCI decision, another longtime Armstrong sponsor, Oakley sunglasses, cut ties with the rider.

Armstrong's astonishing return from life-threatening illness to the summit of cycling offered an inspirational story that transcended the sport. His downfall has ended "one of the most sordid chapters in sports history," USADA said in its report.

The number of children admitted to hospital in England for acute throat infections increased by 76 per cent between 1999 and 2010, according to new research published today in Archives of Disease in Childhood.

Acute throat infection (ATI), which includes acute tonsillitis and acute pharyngitis, is one of the most common reasons for consulting a GP. The majority of ATIs are self-limiting and can be managed at home or by the GP, but a small proportion may require hospital admission.

This study investigated admission rates for children up to age 17 with ATI alongside trends in tonsillectomy rates, between 1999 and 2010. The study was motivated by concerns that the decline in tonsillectomy rates in recent years has led to an increase in hospital admissions for tonsillitis of increased severity. It also investigated whether performing fewer tonsillectomies is associated with higher rates of complications such as quinsy, an abscess that can occur when an infection spreads from a tonsil to the surrounding area.

The research, which was funded by a fellowship from the National Institute for Health Research, showed that the number of children admitted to hospital with ATI increased from 12,283 in 1999 to 22,071 in 2010 - a rise in admission rate of 76 per cent. Short hospital stays, lasting less than two days, increased by 115 per cent over the decade, and accounted for the majority of admissions. Stays of two or more days in hospital for ATI decreased slightly, while quinsy rates remained stable. The authors found no evidence of an association between tonsillectomy trends and admission rates or the severity of ATI or quinsy.

The authors suggest that the dramatic increase in ATI admissions is probably explained by a large number of children being admitted for ATIs who would have formerly been managed in the community. The reasons for this may include changes in the provision of out-of-hours care in general practice and an increase in workload in Accident in Emergency departments. The four hour maximum waiting time in A&E, introduced in 2002, might have meant that doctors, who are under greater pressures, are more inclined to admit children to hospital with an ATI, the authors suggest.

Dr Elizabeth Koshy, from the School of Public Health at Imperial College London, who led the study said: "It is very concerning that there has been a major increase in hospital admissions for children with acute throat infections, particularly among those aged under five. We think this is likely to be due to problems at the primary care and secondary care interface. Our findings relating to short hospital stays suggest that many of the children admitted with acute throat infections could have been effectively managed in the community. Our study highlights the need to urgently address the issue of healthcare access, with improved models of integrated care within primary and secondary care, to avoid potentially unnecessary hospital admissions for relatively minor infections in the future."

Although these findings suggest that declining tonsillectomy rates do not appear to be associated with an increase in more severe ATI or quinsy rates, further research is needed to confirm this. Dr Koshy adds: "Tonsillectomy is a major and costly operation with potentially serious complications. So it seems sensible for clinicians to maintain a high threshold for referring children with recurrent throat infections for tonsillectomy and restrict it to those children who are most severely affected by these infections."

It?s time to go back to school, but this is no Hogwarts. Karan Johar?s ?Student of the Year? will feel like familiar territory for rich brats, for whom high school is nothing less than a fashion week. If shows like ?Gossip Girl? and movies like ?High School Musical? make for your regular viewing experience, then this film should be on your agenda this weekend. For the rest, it?s simply about witnessing a high school experience they could only have dreamt of.

SOTY is set in St Teresa School, in an unknown part ofIndia, where rich brats get admission courtesy large donations, while the poor ones sneak in on merit. It is a school where students with flashy sports cars and designer heels are at odds with small town, aspirational students. The divide is similar to that between Hogwarts? purebloods and muggles. The lack of originality is more than made up for by how nice and shiny everything looks. Like Johar?s other films, a bubblegum romance is what you should expect and is exactly what you get. St Teresa?s or Saint T (as the yuppie kids call it) is a more hip, co-ed version of Gurukul (from Aditya Chopra?s ?Mohabbatein?) and instead of a teacher with a violin, there?s a competition called ?Student of the Year? that gets everyone up and running.

As expected, the cast is ridiculously good-looking and there is a homosexual character. Yogendra Vashishth (Rishi Kapoor) is the gay dean, who eyes the handsome, but already married Gujarati football coach, Karan (Ronit Roy). Rohan Nanda (Varun Dhawan) is the school stud, whose fixed parking spot in the campus, when occupied by Pind da munda Abhimanyu Singh (Siddharth Malhotra), triggers off a fight, that eventually develops into a friendship. The triangle is completed by Rohan?s girlfriend Shanaya Singhania (Alia Bhatt), who always has a Louis Vuitton bag resting on her arm, and whose introductory song is a rehash of that of Poo?s from ?Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham?. Johar also re-launches Sana Saeed (the cherubic Anjali from ?Kuch Kuch Hota Hai?) as high school hottie Tania, the head cheerleader who competes with Shanaya for Rohan?s attention.

After several romps in foreign locales and even a wedding, the story finally moves on to the race for the coveted trophy in Triwizard tournament fashion and what we get is a ?Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander?-inspired climax, that is predictable and hardly exciting.

An entirely new star cast adds freshness and makes up for the stale script. Alia Bhatt looks the part and plays the rich, adorable girl with ease. You know Johar has a star in the making, when you can relate to Bhatt, both in a sexy pout in a bikini, and as the picture of innocence in a salwar kameez. Varun Dhawan, as the brat with a heart of gold, makes you go awww. He is easy on the eye and is by far the best actor of the trio. His charming behaviour will make him the new teenage pin-up sensation and he leaves the kind of impression that Shahid Kapoor did with his debut film ?Ishq Vishk? years ago. Siddharth Malhotra, on the other hand, reminds you of Jimmy Shergill in ?Mohabbatein?, but looks uncomfortable. His dialogue delivery and acting looks rehearsed, and is not convincing enough.

?Student of The Year? is a good looking movie with a cute cast, and that is the main draw of this popcorn entertainer. Go watch it for wardrobe tips!

MOSCOW ? Caroline Wozniacki and Samantha Stosur both earned three-set victories on Saturday to reach the final of the Kremlin Cup.

Wozniacki advanced to her third final of the season by beating Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-4, while Stosur rallied past former No. 1 Ana Ivanovic 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Stosur has a 3-2 record against Wozniacki, winning their last two matches.

In the men's semifinals, second- seeded Andreas Seppi of Italy advanced to his fourth final this year by beating Malek Jaziri of Tunisia 6-3, 6-1. Fourth-seeded Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil overcame veteran Ivo Karlovic of Croatia 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4 for his first indoor final.

In a match with 18 breaks of serve, the third-seeded Wozniacki won five consecutive games against Arvidsson to take the first set. Both players then struggled with their serves for the rest of the match.

The 11th-ranked Dane was serving for the match at 6-5 in the second set but was broken. Wozniacki was broken again while serving for the match at 5-3 in the third but finally clinched the victory when the 46th-ranked Swede netted a backhand in the 10th game.

"I was really fighting out there," Wozniacki said. "It's tough on this surface to finish off the point. This surface suits her game much more than mine and she could get lots of balls. Besides, she was playing really good this week. I'm just happy to make it to the final."

Ivanovic won four consecutive games in the first set but Stosur broke in the eighth game of the second to stay in the match. She then made a decisive break in the seventh game of the decider and sealed the victory on her first match point with a backhand down the line.

"In the first set Ana was playing quite well making good first shots in the rally, which forced me to play in defense." Stosur said. "But in the second set I started serving a lot better and played much more accurate on return. I improved my movement and started playing more offensively and with that I managed to reverse and win the match."

Ivanovic took a medical time out at 3-2 down in the third set to have her right hip treated and bandaged. She said she first felt pain in her hip at 2-1 in the second set and "it got gradually worse and it's still sore walking."

"It's really disappointing, but it was quite a good match," Ivanovic said "I was still trying to come in and I just did two more errors here and there. I thought I still had chances in the second set. But she played well and it was a high-quality match."

Providence Center, a Glen Burnie-based nonprofit organization that serves adults with developmental disabilities, said its products will be featured and sold at the Maryland Green Designer Show Home, a home built by Baldwin Homes. Mike Baldwin, president and CEO of Baldwin Homes, an Anne Arundel County-based builder specializing in green and energy-efficient homes, is a member of one of Providence Center?s founding families. The home is located at 1760 Holladay Park Rd. in Gambrills. Pottery from Providence Center?s studio in Arnold and wood products from its woodshop in Millersville will be among the items available.

Kamenetz names N. Scott Phillips to Baltimore County Planning Board

N. Scott Phillips, an attorney and resident of Woodstock, has been appointed by Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz to a vacant seat on the Baltimore County Planning Board. ?I?m pleased that Scott Phillips is willing to donate his time and considerable expertise to the Planning Board,? said Kamenetz. ?The Planning Board is one of the most instrumental groups in helping to chart the course of land use and development in our communities and he will be a very positive addition to the group.? Beltsville agency wins NAHB award for real estate marketing expertise

Merrick Towle Communications, of Beltsville, an integrated marketing communications firm specializing in the real estate and energy industries, won a Pillar of the Industry Award from the National Association of Home Builders in the category of Best Overall Leasing Campaign for a Rental Community, for the NRP Group?s Cevallos Lofts, an apartment community in San Antonio, Texas. Cevallos Lofts hosted a ?Cool Locations? Facebook and Twitter-centric contest that challenged San Antonio residents to find and photograph the CL sculpture placed at participating businesses. (The grand prize winner was awarded an iPad.) This is the seventh such award won by Merrick Towle Communications in the last 11 years, more than any other agency across the nation. The best of category marketing award is given by the NAHB to honor the industry?s most creative and effective marketing campaigns in real estate.

COPT completes public offering, generating about $204.9 million

Corporate Office Property Trust, of Columbia, an office-focused real estate investment trust, completed its public offering of 8,625,000 newly issued common shares, which reflects the full exercise by the underwriters of their option to purchase 1,125,000 shares. The offering generated net proceeds, before offering expenses, of approximately $204.9 million. COPT said it planned to use net proceeds from the offering to repay amounts outstanding under its unsecured revolving credit facility and for general corporate purposes.

DiamondRock sees FFO rise in third quarter

DiamondRock Hospitality Co., of Bethesda, a hotel real estate investment trust, said third-quarter funds from operations, a key measure of a REIT?s financial performance, rose 4.5 percent to $23.8 million, or 18 cents per diluted share, up from $22.9 million, or 16 cents per diluted share, in the year-prior period. Earnings per share matched the average forecast of 16 analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters. Revenue rose to $183.9 million, a 17 percent increase from the $156.8 million reported in the previous year?s quarter. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters had on average predicted revenue of $191 million. DiamondRock owns upscale and luxury hotels operated by Marriott International Inc.

NOAA opens new weather center at University of Maryland, College Park

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce, opened a new center at the University of Maryland, College Park, that will be the backbone of weather and climate prediction for the nation. The 268,000-square-foot building houses more than 800 NOAA employees who provide a broad range of environmental services, from predicting the hurricane season and El Ni?o/La Ni?a to forecasting ocean currents and large-scale rain and snow storms. Architects designed the energy-efficient building, equipped with a green roof and rainwater bio-retention, to reflect NOAA?s environment and science mission.

Walmart rejuvenates old shopping center

A new Walmart Supercenter opened in Randallstown on Wednesday, replacing a long-vacant grocery store at the Liberty Plaza Shopping Center at Liberty and Brenbrook Roads. More than 350 people have been hired to work in the store, which will be open seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Marshall?s, the other anchor in the shopping center, signed a long-term lease extension with Brixmor Property Group, Liberty Plaza?s New York-based owner, as a result of the Walmart store locating there. Brixmor spent more than $16 million to build the 160,908-square-foot Walmart Supercenter and upgrade the shopping center?s appearance.

MacKenzie Commercial Real Estate Services announced that the team of J. Scott Wimbrow, Christopher C. Bennett, Patricia B. Farrell and Justin T. Mullen has been chosen to represent ARINC in leasing an entire floor of one of the six buildings located on the transportation, communications and systems engineering company?s campus at 2551 Riva Road in Annapolis. The MacKenzie team is marketing 31,546 square feet of contiguous space on one floor. The Class B building offers tenants easy access to major roadways. ?This is an excellent opportunity for firms looking to keep multiple teams together to foster collaboration. Quite often, large firms looking for space in the Annapolis market are forced to take multiple locations, creating a fracture between spaces. The ARINC space eliminates that issue,? said Wimbrow.

Granite Outlet has signed a lease with St. John Properties Inc. for 7,300 square feet of space at Timonium Exchange, located near Interstate 83 and York Road in Baltimore County. The full-service supplier of countertops, cabinets and flooring products intends to relocate to the project from its existing site on York Road in Timonium by the end of October. Granite Outlet will renovate and modernize the showroom area of Timonium Exchange. Bill Holzman of St. John Properties represented the landlord, and Tracey Holehan of CBRE represented the tenant in this transaction.

Merritt Properties LLC reported that Broadway Lights LLC, a lighting contractor, has leased 2,500 square feet of office and distribution space at 6770 Oak Hall Lane, Suite 115, Columbia. Jamie Campbell, Liz Tarran-Jones, Vince Bagli and Steve Shaw of Merritt Properties handled the negotiations for the landlord and tenant.
